"You can become your own
best medicine" is the slogan of this program. We believe
this is true. Historically, many people with serious mental illness
have lived their lives as "takers" and/or "receivers."
As persons with disabilities, they may have received services
offered, supports necessary, or protections required. Lives may
have been devoid of the rewards, satisfactions, and benefits
of giving. If one assumes giving, contributing, helping, and
producing are therapeutic acts, then the typical person with
serious mental illness has missed out on this side of the equation
of life.
The Triple R Volunteer Corps
provides an opportunity for consumers who may not be ready or
able to participate in the competitive labor market to engage
in meaningful, structured, supervised, community-based volunteer
projects. Volunteers will be oriented to being a volunteer, receive
limited training, become a team member, produce tangible results
of their labor, focus on the accomplishments of their efforts,
and be recognized for their contributions. Projects will be developed
based on volunteers' interests and will generally consist of
groups of 3-5 consumers. Individual projects can also be arranged.
